The Generations Who Made History Within These Wall

Where Menomonie’s Story Begins

Wilson Place is one of Menomonie’s most significant historic landmarks. Built in 1859 by Captain William Wilson—founder of Knapp, Stout & Co. Company and the city’s first mayor—the home reflects the legacy of a family that played a central role in the development of western Wisconsin. Over the years, it was expanded and transformed by Wilson’s descendants, including State Senator James Huff Stout, who also founded the school that became the University of Wisconsin–Stout. In the 1920s, the house underwent a dramatic redesign under the care of Wilson’s grandson, George LaPointe Jr., embracing the streamlined elegance of the modern era. Preserved today as a museum, Wilson Place offers a window into the lives and legacy of the people who helped shape Menomonie’s past.
